As long as every modern piano in the land is tuned to 440 by the factory, whether or not the factory is in Germany or Italy or wherever, it seems to me instruments ought to have that pitch as a possibility.
Any instrument not designed around that standard (and, Dale, it is an international standard) ought to be so marked so that the consumers know what they are getting--as Joe's customer obviously didn't. That isn't a matter of being parochial. It's a matter of being honest, it seems to me. The instrument was sold in the U.S., not in Germany, and I believe those folks over there know what standards are applied where.
