Zubin Mehta's dad Mehli Mehta was the long time conductor (and founder, if I remember correctly) of the American Youth Symphony in LA. He retired couple years ago. The orchestra is now being conducted by Alexander Treger, Associate Concertmaster of the LA Phil.
There is another training orchestra in LA which is at the same level as the American Youth Symphony. It is called the Young Musician's Foundation Debut Orchestra. Debut is conducted by a young guy named Wilson Hermanto. Mr. Hermanto conducts another group in New York called the Promethius Chamber Orchestra.
