In LA there are (were) two training orchestras. One was the American Youth Symphony. I was in ot for 3 yrs. it was conducted by Mehli Mehta (Zubin's father). The age bracket was 18-26, although some people stuck around a coupla extra years. The other Orchestra was the Young Musicians' Foundation Debut orchestra. I was in THAT for 3 years also. During my tenure, the conductors were Myung-Whun Chung and Toshi Shimada. Calvin Simmons was there berfore Chung. MANY musicians with orchestra jobs went through BOTH these orchestras. Some names that come to mind that played when I was in: Larry & Roberta Zalkind, Mark Donatelle, Kiki Collins, Richard Ellegino, Fred Beerstein, Brian Marcus, Bruce Roberts, Nico Abandolo and some more whose names have drifted into the fog of seasons past.
