Playing a BAT in a small ensemble

I'll start off by saying I'm in a perdicament of sorts. I am a starving college student looking for a large horn. My problem: I can afford but one tuba and am trying to find a horn that will fit both large ensembles as well as small ensembles. EASY you say, find a nice 4/4 horn or a small 5/4 horn and live happily. Well, thats where it gets more complex. I have found a good deal on a 6/4 horn and quite frankly I love the sound that is 'easily' produced on a giant tuba. Am i crazy to think that I can use a 6/4 in groups like a church orchestra or God forbid a quintet?

Also, I see tuba sound production like that of a sub-woofer. There are some pretty good 10in subs that have a nice bottom but i've never heard one that can physically match the depth or resonance of most 18in. Do you wonderful experts of TubeNet agree that the depth of sound of a 6/4 is almost unobtainable by a small horn?
