Yes, it's possible, but very difficult. There are about 30 professional orchestras in the United States that can be considered 'full-time' and each audition for these orchestras usually include 99 or more other tuba players wanting the same job. Keep in mind that there are only about one or two auditions each year (i.e. Seattle (50+ K/year?)). You could get into a part-time professional orchestra (or two) as well and put together a living combining them with studio teaching and freelancing. Many people do this, but I'm told the life can potentially be unstable and stressful. You could be a soloist, but they rarely exist and those that do often already play in full-time orchestras or are Roger Bobo quality. Military bands guarantee job security, but from previous posts, it seems that they don't pay terribly well. Yes, you can make a living, but, as with every job, there are many risks involved.
