Well... the gold plating on my mouthpeice makes my sound darker. At least I have convinced myself that it does. The plating is so thin that I really doubt it has any appreciable effect on the sound coming out of the bell. But, it does feel different on my face and that is enough to make me play better, thus sound better. It is like dressing up for a recital, you automatically sound better when you look better. For whatever it is worth, get the gold one.
Besides, the gold mouthpiece helps tie the gold plated trim work into a unified presentation on the horn.
