"Stop and drop" seems to be the rule of thumb for both Fedex and UPS. My last tuba (UPS) was simply left in front of my garage when I wasn't home, even though the "recipient signature required" box was checked. And lately, Fedex parcels have been showing up the same way.
It would seem to be logical that if the carrier agreed to get a signature upon delivery that failing to do so would constitute a breach of contract and render them solely liable for the consequences. But I'm sure there are weasel words somewhere in the fine print.
