As an audience member, the Karajan with Vienna Phil is just magical, really beautiful and refined playing. For an orchestral tubist who wants to hear the Bruckner style played on a german BBb tuba, the NDR Hamburg (North German Radio Symph Orch) is the way to go. They recorded all the Bruckners 3 to 9 all live, 8 and 9 done twice. All with Gunter Wand conducting. The tubist is Walter Hilgers, from the German Brass. What an amazing player, he really lifts the orchestra in my opinion.
The 8th they recorded in 1987 was done live in the Leubec Cathedral somewhere in germany, a big old church, it is an amazing sound. They are all on the RCA victor label.
The recordings are worth checking out if you can find them, they are still available.
The American recordings are great to, but I think the sense of time the german orchestras have is something else.
