It ISN'T the nature of the instrument to be behind. It's the nature of the player, more common among tuba players. It's just because we have to go through a lot of tubing.

One thing that IS the nature of the instrument is that it is very resonant and like I said, may not have the quick attack of a piccolo since it it's only about 6 inches compared to the tuba's length. Here's the tip:

-Always think and feel ON TOP OF THE BEAT. If you don't, then it will drag for sure.

-subdivide in your head. That way you'll definately be on tempo as well. You should subdivide when doing whole notes. You can even give the music drive when subdividing whole notes.
