One thing that I delt with that's the "nature of the instrument" is when playing Aaron Copland's "Danzon Cubano". Our director, Bob Feller, had everyone playing very staccato in that piece since it's the style.

Well, me and the other tuba player would play very staccato but he kept telling us to play shorter. He knows it's the nature of the instrument but we had to play shorter. What I ended up doing was a tounge stop. The other brass players did tounge-stop-staccatos as well, but I had to do a very extreme where it's basically the horn resonating and that's it. But it worked and it's what the conductor wanted.
