Compare the quality of British and American euphonia/bariphonia before WWII. Consider the British Brass Band phenomenon and the number of fine soloists it has produced. Is it any wonder that they're imitated, right down to the 3+1 Blakely compensator?
OTOH, one of the nicest little CC's I've ever had the pleasure of playing was a 3-piston compensating Besson CC. Sweet sweet tone, great intonation and the bottom end wasn't stuffy at all, even if it did stop at F#. Would love to get my hands on a 4-valve model.
