Funny, the 3 valve Besson compensator that I played in high school was one of the few tubas on which the mouthpiece wasn't in my chin. I guess I'm a little taller than you. I remember it being one of the easiest playing and nicest sounding tubas I have ever played, but it was the first tuba I ever played (after starting on a fiberglass sousaphone) and that was more than 30 years ago so my memory is probably somewhat idealized. I played that tuba without any changes to the way it came from the factory in 1969 and intonation was good based on the band room strobo-tuner.
