I've played several of the Blaikley-style three-valve compensators, both tubas and euphoniums, and think they play pretty darn well. But those qualities were not present in this uncompensated Stratford, whose primary purpose, it seemed to me from both its appearance and sound, was as a weapon of combat in the previous war.
