Theres a heck of alot more to interpretation than "how long" a given movement is. There are other aspects of balance, tone colour, phrasing. etc. that are within the domain of conductor and how Walter hears Mahler 5 may have be the best representation of what Mahler would have wanted if he where on the podium himself (don't forget Mahler was a world famous conductor before his music gained the appreciation it has today). Sitting with a recording with a stop watch is pretty silly. Tempi is not the end all of any recording.
