I think I fall into the "modern" category for BSEE, having graduated in 1988. I attended a school that emphasized the ability to get the job done over the ability to derive the formulas. The degree has served me well despite my having forgotten the vast majority of the theory. I still retain the ability to go back and figure it out if needed, though, which proves that the degree did accomplish something.
And it depends a lot on what school you go to....my A.S. was from Hudson Valley CC in upstate NY, just a few miles from RPI. HVCC grads had a guaranteed transfer to RPI with a certain grade point average. I decided I wanted to move West, and was nonplussed to find the school I transferred to much, much easier than the CC I transferred from. Usually it's the opposite.
