I haven't read what Rick said, but I know from personal experience that changing bells can have a huge effect. I went from a the preferred medium gold brass bell on my Schmid horn to a Lawson ambronze bell, and the change was almost unbelieveable. Both the response and the sound quality make a huge leap. And this is on a horn that top level pros are willing to pay a whole lot of money for, just the way it is.
And a friend with a very recalcitrant older MW F tuba, had a new bell put on it, and likes the response much better.
Bells have an incredibly larger impact on the instrument than mouthpieces do. I can change mouthpieces all day long and have discernable differences in playability, but putting on a new bell was liken getting an entirely new instrument.
