Chuck,
I have two heroes that a lot of people aren't familiar with. Fred Pfaff, as I understand, played tuba with New York in recordings for years- but not on the tuba parts. The string basses were hard to record in the early part of this century, so Fred played the string bass repertoire on a recording bass, which is a bell-front concert tuba.
Dr. F. kent Campbell, retired tuba player and teacher, who also was director of Bands at Western Ky. University, taught me in the tradition of his teacher, William Bell. While not celebrated nationally as some of his contemporaries have been, he had a profound influence on me and many others, for which I'll always be thankful.
