Dan -

As Joe and P. Becker stated, most of the time you see two horns.
The only way I would do the entire piece on one horn is if I
had no choice. Except for Bydlo, the work calls for a large
sound. Euphonium or F or Eb doesn't matter, it is just alot
easier than on a big horn. My personnel preference is on the
F or Eb. This is not because of solo but more for the g# and b
in bars 42 - 45 in the middle of the Bydlo. The dynamic marking is
FF and the orchestra is kickin'. The euphonium does not have the
weight (or "oomph") that the tuba can provide and therefor would
leave this section weak. Listen to New York (Warren Deck) with
Giuseppe Sinopoli conducting (Deutsche Grammaphon 429 785-2) and
I think you'll agree.

Have fun.

P.S. Thanks for the tip on the 5th valve Joe. I will try that today!
