I've played bydlo on a small, 3valve F tuba with a very smooth, dark sound. However, I'm convinced that that was totally the wrong sound! As someone before mentioned, the instrument that French orchestras used to use was the petite tuba in C. And John Fletcher once said, "I don't care how many blinkin vavles it's got, it's a bloody baritone!". So I too think it's no great shame to play it on a euphonium, or let some eager trombone player take the glory (or blame). As a matter of taste, I like the way Bobo recorded it.
I think the solo needs a bit of nastiness to it - not just be dark and pretty.
One benefit of letting one of the 'boners take it is that you can spell them off in the middle loud part on your bass tuba, or even double them an octave lower - if you can get away with that.
