I'll have to agree with you on the mouthpiece theory. From what *I* can find, the measurments of a French C seem much more like a large modern euph, just in C. Leaving me to agree that if there is a difference in sound, it must be by the mouthpiece used.
I have read, and heard, that many tuba players who use a tuba-rimmed euph mouthpiece create a more tubby sound.
I have looked at a book that compares the cup shapes of early turn of the century brass mouthpieces. All of the French mouthpieces have a deeper funnel shaped cup.
This all has led me to personally believe a French C tuba may have had a mouthpiece with the rim like a smaller tuba mouthpiece, and a funnel cup with probably the depth of a deep bass-bone, with guessing a fairly open throat and back-bore to match its more wide bore (for its time, a wide bore atleast).
Anyone else got a guess?
