We talk a lot about tubas here, but it's hard to visualize them. So, when I visited Dillon Music earlier in the year, I burned half a roll of film with pictures of my York Master alongside a range of tubas that Dillon had in stock. Included in the comparison are:

VMI 3301
Jupiter 582
Cerveny 601
Holton BAT
Conn conversion
Conn 52J
VMI Neptune
Meinl-Weston 2165
Beuscher/Nirschl/and whatever else Matt threw in.

I also included a picture of me playing the large Rusk-converted York that Baltimore Brass showed at the Army conference. That instrument made a--um--big impression on me.

My hope is that when various instruments come up for conversation, there will be a means of determining their size. In most web pages, there is no usable scale, and you can't tell how big they really are.

I've also included a short description of tuba sizing nomenclature, for folks who don't want to ask, yet again, the difference between a 5/4 and a 6/4 tuba and so on. They can look at pictures and see for themselves.
