I have played many of each of the afore mentioned tubas. My opinion is that there are three distinct differences among the different sizes. The 2165, the rudy meinl 5/4 and the culbertson are very large tubas, only good for huge orchestras and then only in certain circumstances. The 2155 and the miraphone 188 sound only slightly smaller than the previous two, however, they are much more handleable. The conn 56J is not a good horn for anything other than solos or quintets. If you are considering military band auditions, the 2165 and culbertson are way too big. You might be able to swing it with a PT6, but the 2155 is better and a lot more versatile. Being in control of your horn and having the ability to play with great technique is more important than breaking down walls with a huge tuba, especially for military band auditions. Play as many 2155's as possible and get the best one you find.
