I was asked to play the cello part in a musical using a reduced orchestra (Guys and Dolls) on trombone. Being a euphonium player and not a trombonist, some of the passages are a little difficult to play on trombone. One of the guys suggested I try it on euphonium, and the conductor agreed. Everything went well, and I found that it is
much easier to imitate a cello on euphonium, rather than trombone. Everytihng except the
balance. It seemed the euphonium, with the angle of the bell seemed to overbalance
the orchestra.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Or any suggestions on how I could
mute/muffle the sound without affecting the tone quality? thanks
