You don't have to tin it if you get the surface really clean. I use a "Scotch-brite" wheel and thoroughly clean the inside of the cap. The branch is buffed prior to assembly, so I just have to degrease it and wipe dry before soldering.

How much solder you put in the cap depends on what the customer wants. If he/she says I like how light those Nirschel tubas are, then I just run a small bead all around. I prefer about 1/2" all the way around and extra on the eds that always get banged over the years. If the customer says he/she likes a dark heavy sounding horn, I stuff an extra 1/2 pound of solder under the guard for them. Matt
