Although I've not had any experience soldering brass instruments, after 30+ years in the FAA (Radar, Computer, etc) I did a lot of soldering of electrical components.
Tinning helps spread the heat evenly to both parts more evenly and assures us of getting the best flow of solder equally around the connection or joint. I would think it's a good idea. FWIW.
