For New Mexico All State, they play two etudes (Blazhevich #50 and 51 this year) plus scales- major and chromatic. They tryout in three locations and then the low brass audition team member (yes, one judge per section) chooses the best 12-16 for the two large school bands and six for the small school band. Small school band auditioners must choose if they are auditioning for the large schools or small schools. A few music districts have there own Honor Bands, but they have nothing to do with All State tryouts.
