When it comes to a vanilla mouthpiece as a one-size-fits-most solution, then it's hard to argue against a Bach 18 or a Conn Helleberg. These are just about as vanilla as it gets, and players who use them can take them right into adulthood.
But there are exceptions, and perhaps you were one. I also played on a 24AW all through school. Was it better for me? I don't know--I never tried anything else. I have this sneaking suspicion, however, that I'd have been better served with a mouthpiece that made me more attentive to using too much pressure.
I picked the 24AW because it was most comfortable. I didn't feel any pain at all when I used far too much pressure to play too high. A Helleberg would have encouraged me to play with less pressure, don't you think?
