I was browsing down the list to see if anything had popped up and I came across Wade's post. One point of fact:

You do not need to be a US citizen to have a SSN (Social Security Number) My wife has one and pays taxes even though she's a Japanese citizen with a US Green Card (Permanent Residence Visa - employment authorized)

And you don't even have to be a permanent resident to have an SSN. Any visa that permits legal employment is enough. There are lots of foreign nationals working here on company assignments or even under the H1B program, and they have SSN's as well.

I even remember some time ago having an English friend who was in the US Air Force. He said that he could become eligible for US citizenship faster by serving in the armed forces. I'm sure he also had an SSN.
