Back in my day, if we wanted valve oil we had to wild-cat a well and derrick, luck into finding petroleum in the ground, and take if off to a refinery. We whittled our mouthpieces out of old discarded telegraph poles. The spit-valve was invented thirty years after I retired from my tenure in the West Jefferson Municipal Band. I used to be able to by a bucket of coal for my Stanley Steamer for only 13¢.

My computer still has a big spring-loaded crank on the side!
