I say go for it! Just as an example, I am trying out for jazz band on bass trombone( that's like a horizontal baritone, right?) After practicing (in the high range) on the 1-a quarter G mouthpiece for an hour, I went to playing tuba in an octet, and it actually felt a little better than usual. That's just me, but I think you should go for learning baritone.
