Hello Lisa,
I assume that you are teaching tuba to the student who either has been diagnosed with or is suspected to have ADHD. If so, it's possible that he is bored to tears by the tempo of beginning tuba music classes, and might do better with a group class (with peer pressure to keep with the music), or even different instrument and music style.
I say this because I personally knew an extraordinarily bright musician who was diagnosed with ADD in her forties. Before diagnosis and medication, she couldn't remember short-term details or concentrate on any topic for more than one or two minutes.
Although she started formal training on violin in high school, but became a fiddle player. Reading dance music slowed her down, but she could really rip through Orange Blossom Special and the like with more multiple notes and harmonics and slurs than should be possible for mere mortals.
