I think that scales in modes or not in modes are useful for most only after intervals are correctly learned, in relation to a reference pitch. (tonic, perhaps.) If one had a device that continuously sounded the tonic while a scale was being played, it seems that chord intonation would soon follow. The horizontal intonation generally is in relation to at least some other tone....and if not, it is moot as to what is "correct," depending on the assumptions of the listener as to the missing reference pitch(es.)
