I stopped by the store and as you said, A is 2nd and B natural is 2&3. Problem is, he is still going up in pitch as he adds tubing which makes the horn naturally want to go lower in pitch. Therefore, he is still crossing over a harmonic series. So 1,2,&3 for A (some 1st valve slide pull) and lift the 1st valve to play the B natural 2&3. The slur seems fine that way.
