Okay, I see your point. I sat with my B&H 983 this morning fooling with the A->B slur (and the E->F# slur on a larger BBb) and while 123->23 does produce a smoother slur, the 123 for A is so very stuffy (as is 24). I found that concentrating on the instant that the transition takes place could produce equally smooth results using 2->23, albeit with some mental effort.
I wonder if depressing the 3 valve more slowly as the poster mentions, simply gives the mind a bit more time to coordinate the slur correctly between the fingers and the lips. If so, then a bit of practice may be the answer, but your solution produces better immediate results.
