You shouldn't be too surprised to find it plays well, that seems to be the only good thing folks can agree on. The craftsmanship, durability, and price point are the major issues. Yes, it seems like your friend got lucky with his horn in that respect. Or maybe he's just real careful with it.
As for your conspiracy theory, well... I've seen some open attacks on Vince, and some thinly veiled ones, but for that many folks to conspire against him by nay-saying a particular tuba which he sells, that seems far fetched. I'm relatively new to this BBS, but it seems to me that folks say what they mean, especially when they have strong opinions against something. Of course, there might be some overlap, like the experience of buying a bad horn being exacerbated by (or contributing to) a bad overall impression of the seller, but that's hopefully as far as it goes.
