Years ago I replaced the corks on my mute with soft plastic foam. I can set the mute lightly into the bell and have more than half an inch of space all around it, so that a lot of sound comes out, or I can jam it all the way in so that there is a much smaller space, giving a much thinner (more muted or "gedamft") effect. It's not hard to remember how much I have to push it in to get the sound I want on any given passage, and the mute makes much less noise when it rolls around on the floor. Best of all, it still sounds exactly like a cello when I stand it upright on the floor and then accidentally knock it over. It's great fun to watch the heart attacks in the string section when they hear that sound.
