$1700 will be a bit tight to find a used rotary horn in in good shape, or even a 4 valve piston, but it can be done. The Mirafones will command a lot of money on the used market, and the Yamaha rotaries will also go for $3000 or more in good shape. You might want to look at 4 valve upright piston horns. At around $1700, you should be able to get your hands on Yamaha 321 or maybe an older King. If you can increase your budget to over $2000, there will be many horns available to you. Try to reach Taylor Music ( www.taylormusic.com ), as they usually have a decent selection of used tubas. Or, you could move to Grand Rapids (MI) and use the Yamaha 321 that our band owns, as right now it is just taking up space in my back bedroom (the tuba room - usually has 3 or 4 horns in it!). Best of luck in trying to find a horn.
