basically I think the system is like this:
Grade 1 beginning instrumental music
Grade 2 Middle school level
Grade 3 Easy High School
Grade 4 Advanced HS
Grade 5 College
Grade 6 professional
That is the way I have always understood it to be I may be wrong however. obviously there are going to be crossovers and differences of opinions.
I think the publishers have certain criteria they use as far as range, technical difficulty, rhythms, time signatures etc. But I do not believe it is a standard critierial by any means. It is very subjective. there are pieces which are technically easy but are very challenging musically. ken k
