The Tubaist I observed was using 1st and 4th, 2nd and 4th, 3rd and 4th. Being a three valve horn player all my life, I was amazed at his ability to alternate his fingering patterns. What a level of accomplishment! I try to put in at least two hours a day on my horn, but the more I preactise scales and technique exercises, the less time I have for actually practicing my quintet and concert band material. The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know. I just wish I could find a short cut to this knowledge.
