Just as a Warning:
Before you entirely denounce the euphonium, be aware that it has been used on numerous occasions for Bydlo. In fact very prominent, "world-class", tubists have allowed the principal or second trombonist to play the part on euphonium. They do this out of their desire for the ENSEMBLE to sound the best it can. Also, there are a number of peices written for orchestra with euphonium like the Planets and Till (Strauss). I am not a big euphonium fan, but it does have its place. Check out the six valve French Tuba in C. This is an excellent horn for Bydlo and is a step higher than the euphonium. While I don't neccesarily agree with the euphonium/tuba mix on Fantastique, it does help to get a euphonium player a little bit of orchestra experience. And isn't that what college is about? If our tuba playing friend keeps working, he will get a chance to play this piece again.
