I wasn't addressing the technical aspects of the upcoming concert. I believe the underlying human aspect has much more far reaching potential. The concert will come and go and be forgotten by many. Being a supportive and gracious colleague will be of much more import.

It is college, it is only one concert, it is supposed to be an education experience. You're not cutting a recording on a major label which will be reviewed by musicoligists for decades to come. Let the experimentation happen. Let the friend enjoy one of the only times he will ever get to play his chosen instrument with an orchestra. You have probably played with an orchestra a couple of times before, and if you are working diligently, will get to many more. A euphonium player gets to do it only a few times in their entire lifetime due to orchestral scoring not calling for it terribly often.

The choice the conductor, or whomever, made to use euph may be one which you and the majority of others don't agree with, but frankly your outranked here.

There is one good phrase to remember when it comes to dealing with the supremely powerful. "Yes, sir". Another which helps to deal with situations which seem ludricrous is, "Suck it up and drive on."

Go to the concert and try to listen with a clear, open mind.
