You are, of course, referring to the trumpet of Don Ellis, which (last I heard) was languishing in a closet at Eastfield Jr. College, in Dallas (which is a long story). I hope that it has found a more respectful home by now.

I am a great fan of Ellis' inventive use of time signatures (Final Analysis is mostly in 27/8), but that quartertone thing - ugh. There is too much beauty in music to spend time inventing new ways to make noise (with no disrespect for those whose musical heritage has trained your ears to hear quartertones as music, to most Westerners it just sounds out of tune).

Joe Baker, who played trombone in the concert to dedicate the Don Ellis library at Eastfield Jr. College.
