I'm reminded of the one-room school-house, where nearly everyone was in a self-paced program. I like the approach--as long as progress is enforced. How do you do that? I lot of discussion, looking over the shoulder, testing, and punishment for laziness (as expressed by bad grades).

No one else will do your improving for you, but your parents and role models can surely establish the expectation of improvement. I don't see a lot of that even in the economic classes where this isn't supposed to be a problem, but there are examples of those who hae excelled from all classes and categories who were subject to such expectations.
