You are talking about a nearly-century-old tuba.  The H.N White Co. produced some instruments with a lion's head engraved on the bell.  Some of those very early Kings had a ton of silver plating on them, so they might hold up well in a sea-air environment.  Otherwise, the tuba in question might have been a Selmer-Paris tuba.  Tell the guys that unless they want to find some antique tubas and have them restored, just go with some good, modern instruments.
