I don't think having the tuning slide in the leadpipe _contributes_ to the hirsbrunner with that configuration playing better in tune since it has pretty much the same bugle as the rotary version.
The hirsbrunner 4/4 CCs with the straight in leadpipe compensate for the shorter leadpipe with changes to the bugle mostly right after the valve section. I think that is why they don't play as well in-tune.
I'm not terribly sure what you mean by "knuckle", what model of sousaphone did the valve section come from?
