I've said this before in slightly different ways (more "coarse" and "inflammatory" stuff ahead)...

I would go so far as to say that many (most?) tuba jobs have been rewarded to the "least faulty" player, and that very very few have been rewarded to "flawless" (Bobo-esque) players. This truth may be why so many believe that "chance" is a major factor... i.e. "Who played the lest crappy audition today?" (hair on the backs of many now straightening up...)

If Roger Bobo (with his 1960's-70's playing prowess, or perhaps with the amount he still retains today...tremendous indeed) auditioned for most any symphony orchestra, his "unique sound" / "unique interpretation" would not keep him from beating the pants off of everyone else.
