My opinion is that the 184 is exactly what you are looking for. It has a clear, projecting sound that I think is well suited for solo playing. It also has (at least the ones I've tried) a fantastic low register. Whether it is worth the expense is another question.
Also, I haven't tried the new version, which has gotten great reviews. Call Tony Clements or Matt Walters for pricing and a more "expert" opinion.
