What you describe exactly matches my own experience. I'm now doing long tones for a couple of minutes to establish airflow, and then doing slow and easy flexibility exercises in the middle range to limber up. I'm finding that this warm-up approach is more effective than doing long tones and low-range slurs, which is what I used to do.

I'm definitely of the opinion that lip flexibility is a bigger problem for me than airflow, though I can't say how much it is related to age. I think my embouchure concept has been wrong the whole time, frankly.
