F horn music on F tuba

I just noticed that playing French horn music on an F tuba using trumpet fingerings gives notes of correct pitch, only down an octave from the French horn. Obviously, this extends the range of solo literature tremendously. Was this a factor in the creation of the F tuba? Is this common knowledge that I was simply clueless about?
