I've been thinking about adding piston rings to a very worn set of valves on an old Eb tuba. Probably cut grooves 1/8" wide and .010" deep and stretch in some thin rings of teflon. Probably need three rings, top, between the ports and bottom. Teflon is pretty slippery and if done well would prevent metal to metal contact. Might not seal around the valve well enough. E.G. there might still be too much leakage going around the circumference of the valve. And for sure the teflon wouldn't wear as well as any metal, but stretchy teflon rings maybe only .015" thick wouldn't be hard to replace.
